Mèmak Preserve

North Yarmouth, Cumberland County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 46 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 1-mile loop
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: forest, stone wall

This Royal River Conservation Trust preserve has a Native American name: Mèmak, for pileated woodpecker. When I visited Mèmak in the winter, the preserve had a few snowmobile/ATV tracks cutting across it, and you could do an easy 1-mile loop through the mature woods, with oak, pine, hemlock, beech, and maple. The trail follows a mossy old stone wall for a ways.

Directions: The preserve is at 78 Lufkin Road, in North Yarmouth. There is a small parking lot on the left shortly before the power line.
