Milliken Mills Woods

The community seems proud of this trail system — and they should be! It is a wonderful place to walk. The trail are well-marked with color-coded tags, and there are surprises along the way, including a gravesite for a Revolutionary soldier and a pretty stream with sturdy wooden bridges. There are two parts of the trail system on either side of Portland Avenue.

Close to the more southern trailhead, you’ll find a small meadow with picnic tables. The gravestone is also on this part of the trail system; to access it, walk along the orange-blazed trail. When you see the information panel about the grave, you’ll see a blue-marked trail in front of you. The gravestone is down the hill, slightly to the left.

Across Portland Ave., you can continue your walk on more pleasant trails. From the kiosk, you’ll find the trail heads off to the left. These trails are again well-marked and fairly smooth (remarkably free of roots), as well as mostly flat, except for a steep hill closer to the stream. The brook is a great destination, and is easy to cross thanks to well-built bridges.

Directions: The smaller parking lot is at 192 Portland Avenue. The larger lot is farther north on Portland Ave., around the bend in the road.
