Among the many highlights at this Cobscook Shore preserve is walking out on a point of flaking schist to look out over the blue-green waters and seaweed-laced shores of the tidal Carrying Place Cove.
Another highlight is heading to the headland jutting out into Whiting Bay, where the trail brings you to the rocky outcrop with a view of the watery landscape around you.
There are lots of other places to admire the beauty here on these relatively easy trails. Expect minors ups and downs.
When I hiked here in 2025, the preserve was brand new, still under construction, and I don’t have a good map! The first big loop is about 1.2 miles, and the smaller second loop is about 0.5 miles. Based on photos I’ve seen online, I believe there is a third little loop, as well.
Directions: From Route 189 turn onto Chapel Hill Road, at the cemetery. Go 1.5 miles, the road will change to Timber Cove Road. Turn left onto Moore Road, and go just under 1 mile to the parking area and trailhead on the right. The road will turn to dirt.
