The Androscoggin Land Trust was gifted the property surrounding this pristine undeveloped pond in late 2024. While there is not an officially mapped or maintained trail network, there are a variety of footpaths and ATV trails surrounding the pond. The best trails for walking are shown in the Google map above, but note that there are other trails in the area not shown on the map.
The west shore of the pond is gently sloping and a wide trail follows an old road south from Meadowview Road. The walking here is generally easy, and there are a few nice spots with water access, but there is one section near the northwest corner of the pond which has significant mud holes lasting into the summer. These mud holes can usually be bypassed with care.
The eastern shore of the pond is drastically different, with steep slopes and numerous rocky outcroppings. A rough footpath connects the boat launch at the northern end of the pond with a few rock ledges on the eastern shore. The water is quite deep right off shore, and there are a few great swimming spots.
Besides visiting on foot, the pond is great to explore by water, either paddling in the warmer months or by crossing the ice in winter. One particularly impressive rock ledge is located on a point near the south end of the pond, and is best accessed by water. Please be sure to leave no trace and help protect this beautiful backcountry pond for others to enjoy for years to come!
Directions: From Route 140 in the Gilbertville neighborhood of Canton, head northeast on LaPlante Road. After 0.6 mile, bear left onto Meadowview Road. This road quickly becomes dirt, and soon passes through a gate which is closed during the winter and mud season. This road is in generally good shape, but low clearance vehicles may want to park shortly before the trailhead, due to a rocky hill. At 1.7 miles from LaPlante Road, an ATV trail leaves Meadowview Road heading south. Park here, being sure not to block Meadowview Road or the ATV trail. This ATV trail is the start of the trail to Forest Pond.
