Belfast

  • Stover and Head of Tide Preserves — These are two preserves, one 53 acres (Stover) and the other 92, but they are almost directly across the street from each other, so I have joined them in one site. Some pretty sections along the Passagassawakeag River.
  • Little River Community Trail — A very lovely 5.4-mile walk along two reservoirs and a river. Two road crossings involved.
  • Rail Trail — Beautiful, wheelchair accessible path — roughly 3 miles if you include the downtown harbor section — along the wide Passagassawakeag River.
  • Hills to Sea Trail — The trailhead and parking area for the Rail Trail is shared with the start, or really the end, of the 47-mile-long Hills to Sea Trail, designed for walkers who like to go the distance.
  • Fristad Trails — After a decade of tending the land and creating a trail system every dog would love, the owner donated the 94-acre park to the city of Belfast in 2025. Dogs can run off leash here, and they and their caretakers will enjoy exploring the charming network of well-signed trails and pretty streams.
  • Stephenson Preserve and Pendleton Park — These two conserved parcels are situated on the side of a steep hill alongside the river. Mountain bike trails, with their many switchbacks, make the incline somewhat easy to hike up! A highlight is a mossy stream, on the Pendleton side.
