Islesboro

Map shows trails in Waldo County.

  • Narrows Preserve — A small preserve, with a .5-mile trail
  • Herbert Preserve — Two short loops rim the forested edges of the tidal Mill Pond.
  • Hutchins Island and Marsh Preserve — A beautiful walk to a small island and around a marsh (as the name implies!). The beach connects to Hinkle Preserve. Note the parking area — it’s a short walk from the trail head.
  • Town Beach — More a destination (and a gorgeous one, at that) than a walk, there are short trails through the woods to different parts of the rocky shore).
  • Warren Island State Park — The island offers campsites and a 1.5-ish mile walking trail.
  • Hinkle Preserve — A tiny but lovely walk through ferns to a beach. The beach connects to Hutchins Island and Marsh Preserve.
  • Lily Guest Trail — A 1.2-mile loop brings you to a viewing spot over quiet Jones Cove.
  • Turtle Head — If you only have time to do one walk on Islesboro, I recommend Turtle Head, a narrow point that brings you to a bluff with expansive views of Penobscot Bay.
  • Broad Point Preserve — A 1-mile loop  through a cedar swamp to the rocky beach on Gilkey Harbor.
  • Blueberry Hill Preserve — I didn’t get the chance to hike this, but it sounds beautiful. The Islesboro Islands Trust says the preserve has blueberry fields, apple orchards, and a learning garden, with views of Hutchins Island and Coombs and Parker Coves. There is a 1.5-mile trail that makes a loop through alder swamp and forested wetland to the shore of Parker Cove.
