Aldermere Farm Preserve, Rockport

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 136 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 0.6 miles one way (2 trails)
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: working farm, West Penobscot Bay

If you’re seeking an austere stony seascape (especially on a cold, gray day!), you can reach one by walking down an easy 0.4-mile trail from Calderwood Lane. This is one of two short trails on Aldermere Farm, which is protected by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. The second trail on the farm, which is 0.2-miles long, brings you to a little bluff overlooking the small Lilly Pond.

As for parking, the preserve map recommends visitors leave their cars on Russell Avenue. This means you’d have to take a short walk down Calderwood Lane to reach the trail to the ocean. But when we visited in the winter, people were parking at a lot across the lane from the trailhead.

Directions: The two trails are marked by small signs at the start of the paths. (From the land trust): From the junction of Route 1 and 90 in Rockport head 0.3 mile east on West Street. Turn left at the intersection. Drive 0.5 mile and then stay right onto Russell Avenue. The Farm is located 0.6 mile on either side of the road. The address is 20 Russell Avenue, Rockport.
