The trail begins along a grassy path before passing through beautiful woods. At the first intersection, if you turn right, you’ll walk toward a vernal pool. The loop then swings around, passing a section referred to as “the ledges,” which takes you up to exposed bedrock peeking out of the forest floor. There are helpful ropes to get you up a short, steep section.
Along your walk, especially on Fox Run trail, expect to see fern groves, some of them growing thickly in places. Overall, Jacobs’ Pines Preserve offers a peaceful walk in the forest, with subtle charms. It’s mostly flat with helpful arrows along the trail to keep you on the right path.
If you do the outer loop, the total distance is a bit longer than 1.5 miles.
A high school teacher, George Jacobs, who was said to have loved trees, created the conservation area in 1986.
Directions: The preserve is off Lower Mills Road, about 0.4 miles from the intersection with East Madison Road. The driveway to this preserve is short but somewhat rough, bringing you to an open grassy area with a kiosk.
