A starter hike for kids! The relatively easy .3-mile climb, much of it on a rocky ledge with pitch pine and blueberries, brings hikers to a glorious summit. The three lookouts along the way include views back to the Deer Isle bridge and a sweeping vista of Penobscot Bay and its summer sailboats, Pumpkin Island lighthouse, and scattered islets and islands. A side trail closer to the bottom ends at a fairy village. The land is protected by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust.
Directions: From Route 1, take Route 15 south through Blue Hill Center for 31.3 miles until you reach Herrick Road on the right. (If you have reached the Deer Isle Bridge you have gone too far.) Take Herrick road for 1.5 miles to the trailhead and parking lot on your left, directly across from the Robin Hood Camp.
