This 3,122-foot mountain offers a relatively short, steep climb to wonderful views of Katahdin, Hamlin Peak, and the valley in the middle of the park. Additionally, if it’s a hot day, you can plunge into Sandy Stream Pond at the end, especially from Big Rock (accessible via a side trail). Careful of leeches. (To avoid all leeches, you can dip into Roaring Brook down a side path in the Roaring Brook campground, near site 10. Ask the ranger for directions.)
You’ll start your hike on Sandy Stream Pond Trail, which begins at the ranger’s office at Roaring Brook Campground. For the first 0.7 miles, the path hugs the south side of Sandy Stream Pond. Check out the side trails to the pond’s edge for fabulous views of Katahdin, Hamlin Peak, and the peak you’re about to summit, South Turner.
At the junction with South Turner Mountain Trail, hikers continue straight. The route begins to climb more steeply in about a half mile from this point. There’s a small field of boulders to clamber over and then a good portion of the remainder of the trail consists of stone steps.
Close to the end of the trail, you’ll emerge at an open section of rock. A large cairn marks the spot, which has great views. The next ~0.2-mile leg might be the most challenging section of the climb as you have to make your way up boulders, but the end is in sight. The summit is open, with lots of ledge to spread out and check out views.
Directions: Pick up the trailhead at Roaring Brook Campground. The campground is about eight miles from Togue Gate House on Roaring Brook Road.
