Just about 1.2 miles farther north along the dirt road from the Little Spencer Mountain trailhead, you’ll pass a rather discreet trail to Little Spencer Pond. When we visited in 2024, there was a small trail sign tucked into the woods a few feet from the roadside. Other than this, the trail was unmarked but easy to follow.
The path is flat, through pretty forest. Some of it follows a stream that drains Little Spencer and flows into Spencer Pond. Once you reach the pond, expect to be met with stillness and quiet, and views of Lobster Mountain. When we visited in October, we could walk around the edge of the pond, since the water levels had retreated from the stony shore somewhat. The pond is on private land as far as I can tell.
Directions: I found the trailhead using AllTrails, and from the road, you can make out a faint path heading into the woods. Another good thing to do: download a Google map of Maine on your phone when you are connected to WiFi. This allows you to navigate offline, when there is no cellular signal. Then you can use your Google maps app to find the Little Spencer Mountain trailhead. Once you reach this trailhead, continue another 1.2 miles and look for a barely discernible trail and sign on the right.
Here are my directions to Little Spencer, following Google maps: From Greenville, drive north about 18.8 miles on Lily Bay Road to Kokadjo. Shortly after leaving the tiny village, the pavement will end. Bear left at the fork. At 1.5 miles north of Kokadjo, bear left at the intersection to turn onto Spencer Bay Road. Continue straight at the next four-way intersection, in about 0.8 miles. Keep going straight, passing roads to your right and left. Go straight through the next four-way intersection. At the T-section, go left. You’ll then reach a four-way intersection at about 7.4 miles from the start of Spencer Bay Road. Turn right, toward Spencer Pond Camps. The trailhead will be on your right in about 2.2 miles. Continue another 1.2 miles to the pond trail on your right. I added a screenshot of an area map below. Using a Delorme Gazetteer might also be helpful.
