Bog Overlook Trail, Rockland

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 1,000 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 0.75 miles
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: large peat bog

A short trail — just about a quarter mile — brings visitors to a view of a vast peat bog, called the Oyster River Bog or Rockland Bog. It’s about 700 acres, the largest peatland in the midcoast region. Continue along the forested loop for another quarter mile.

While the going is easy, the path can be wet and muddy. The parking lot is quite spacious, big enough for about six cars. Eventually, the town plans to build a connecting trail all the way to the harbor. We will stay tuned!

Directions: The trail is off Bog Road, about 600 feet on the left if you are coming from Mountain Road.
