Bog Overlook Trail, Rockland

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 1,000 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 0.25 miles
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: large peat bog

A very short trail — just about a quarter mile — brings visitors to a view of a vast peat bog, called the Oyster River Bog or Rockland Bog. It’s about 700 acres, the largest peatland in the midcoast region.

Additionally, since my visit, the land trust has created a little loop at the end. See the map below.

While the going is fairly easy, the path can be muddy. The parking lot is quite spacious, big enough for about six cars. Eventually, the town plans to build a connecting trail all the way to the harbor. We will stay tuned!

Directions: The trail is off Bog Road, about 600 feet on the left if you are coming from Mountain Road.
