Cousins River (River’s Edge Trail), Freeport

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: Not sure
  • Trail Mileage: ~0.6 miles one way
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Sights: marshy shore of the Cousins River

In about 0.6 miles, you can walk from the YMCA through shady, quiet forest to the marshy shore of the Cousins River (and the unfortunate traffic roar of nearby Route 1!).

The Freeport Conservation Preserve has side trails to Lambert Road (not marked on my map) and the Freeport Inn and Cafe. The trail is fairly easy, but has some ups and downs, including a descent to the river’s edge.

The trail on the side of the YMCA closest to Route 1 is easy and swings around an outdoor playground/obstacle/challenge course for kids set up in a grassy area. There’s a great hill for rolling down.

Directions: The trailhead, marked by a kiosk, is located on a knoll at the back left-hand corner of the Casco Bay YMCA parking lot on Old South Freeport Road, off Route 1. Park in the YMCA lot.
