The Debe Park River Trail is a wonderful local asset — a 0.5-mile paved trail along the Kennebec River. There are benches and workout equipment, as well as a side path for mountain and fat bikes (no dogs allowed on the bike trail).

If you start from Mount Pleasant Street, you will begin along an impressive switchback that swings you down two leisurely bends to reach the path along the rushing river. Then it’s a straight shot to Joyce Street. The views are fabulous of the opposite bank with its rocky, craggy banks. There is even a waterfall!

If you’d like to continue your walk, you can edge around the fence surrounding the water treatment plant to walk the Philbrick Trails. Unfortunately, these are not wheelchair accessible, but they bring you to a sandy area by the river that looks like a possibly good swimming spot.

Directions: There are lots of places to park on the side of Mount Pleasant Road and about nine spots at the lot at the other end of the trail near the water treatment plant and Philbrick Trail system at the end of Joyce Street.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
