  • Sights: moss-carpeted woods, Pleasant Bay

You can do a roughly 2.4-mile walk on the 127-acre Frank E. Woodworth Preserve, located at the end of a peninsula and protected by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. The loop trail passes over moss-carpeted ground and under old trees, many more than a century old. The preserve includes 3-acre Hog Island, and two smaller islands, Peter and George Islands.

Note: The dead-end access road, Marshville Road, turns to gravel at the boat launch and is not plowed in the winter.

Directions: From Route 1, go 8 miles down Marshville Road. Continue straight when the road veers right to go to the town landing. Continue on the gravel road, and you will see a sign and small parking lot on your left. Parking is limited to four vehicles. The land trust asks people to return another time if the lot is full.
