Frank E. Woodworth Preserve

Harrington, Washington County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 127 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 2.4-mile walk
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Sights: moss-carpeted woods, Pleasant Bay

You can do a roughly 2.6-mile walk on the 127-acre Frank E. Woodworth Preserve, located at the end of a peninsula and protected by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. The trails pass over moss-carpeted ground and under towering trees, many more than a century old.

A 0.8-mile leg brings you to a 1-loop trail — the start of which is marked with trail signs and a bench. The loop, as it sweeps around the coast, offers several opportunities to access the rocky shore. A short spur trail on the western side of the loop brings you to the “overlook,” on a little spit of grassy land. For added adventure, you can walk out to a couple of tiny islands north of Narrows Island when the tide is low (on the east side of the loop). The walking is easy to moderate, with some ups and downs, and rooty, uneven sections.

The preserve includes 3-acre Hog Island, and two smaller islands, Peter and George Islands.

Note: The dead-end access road, Marshville Road, turns to gravel at the boat launch and is not plowed in the winter.

Directions: From Route 1, go 8 miles down Marshville Road. Continue straight when the road veers right to go to the town landing. Continue on the gravel road, and you will see a sign and small parking lot on your left. Parking is limited to four, maybe five, vehicles. The land trust asks people to return another time if the lot is full.
