Jordan Homestead, Ellsworth

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 31 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 1.1 miles
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: moderate
  • Sights: Union River, field, Whittaker Brook, family cemetery

The 1.1-mile walk at the old Jordan Homestead begins in a field, close to the Jordan family graveyard. At the start of the walk, the path passes a “heritage” garden and some bird boxes and heads into the woods. Soon you’ll be walking on a bank above the charming Whittaker Brook.

When you reach the intersection, at 0.2 miles, you can go right or left to do the 0.7-mile loop. If you go right, you’ll climb a few feet up to a tall, narrow ridge (an esker?), with views through trees over the broad river. The 31-acre property, which belonged to the Jordan family for more than 200 years, has 3,000 feet of water frontage, and is beautiful. The path does have some ups and downs, and is uneven in areas.

Directions: The address is 169 Bayside Road, between Lundin Way and Pioneer Farm Way. If coming from downtown Ellsworth, you will see the preserve sign and preserve parking lot on your right.
