Rail Trail, Belfast

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: N/A
  • Trail Mileage: 3 miles one way
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: Passagassawakeag River, harbor, Belfast

This is delightful river path, built on the former Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad tracks. The roughly 3-mile trail is wheelchair/stroller accessible and unceasingly scenic, with nonstop views over the river. (I’m including in this length the bridge and a short portion of trail in town along the harbor. This last section runs through Heritage Park and Steamboat Landing Park.)

The path is also connected to the 47-mile Hills to Sea trail, which is not open to bicycles. So if you’re on a bike, you’ll need to lock that up if you’d like to continue your journey.

Directions: There are three parking areas where you can pick up the trail — at either end and in the middle. From downtown Belfast, park on Water Street and access the trail by the Armistice footbridge. Parking is also available at the trail’s terminus, at the City Point Railroad Museum along City Point Road, and at the Stephenson Preserve parking lot, near the trail’s midpoint.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
