Walk at this state park if you want to walk on grassy trails and under the arches of old apple tree limbs while listening to the distant sound of crashing surf. There are about three miles of trails on this 274-acre park. A few picnic tables have been set up at beautiful spots — one by a field, another in the woods, and a third overlooking the ocean. If you hear loud gunshots while you’re walking in the woods, have no fear. It is the neighboring farm’s cannon going off to protect its blueberry crop from raiding birds.
Get sweaty and then go for a swim at the lovely half-mile long sandy beach! It’s at the end of the Starr Trail, and looks out over Englishman Bay. You can also swim in the warmer Simpson Pond.
Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach between Oct.1 and March 31.
Directions: Turn right off Route 1 onto Roque Bluffs Road in Jonesboro. At the T-intersection in 5 miles, turn right and continue south on Roque Bluffs Road to Schoppee Point. Coming from the north, approximately one mile south of the Machias town center turn left on Roque Bluffs Road and continue 8 miles to village of Roque Bluffs. The main trailhead parking is located in Roque Bluffs village. Continue .25 miles to get to the beach and more parking.
