Jay Recreation Area Trails

Jay, Franklin County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 300 acres
  • Trail Mileage: ~5 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Sights: fields, woods

The best part of this town-owned trail system is the vista at the trailhead and parking area at the end of Watertower Lane. You begin your walk here at the top of a field, with views of the western mountains, and descend along the gently sloping meadow into the woods. The town mows curvy, looping trails throughout the meadows.

The rest of the system is mostly wooded, but includes an old apple orchard being lost to the forest. Many of the trails are posted with old wooden signs and appear to be frequently used by student sports teams.

Nordic Report, by Sam Shirley

In the winter, many of the trails are groomed with set track for classic skiing. When there is ample snow, the trails have some of the best advanced skiing around, with lots of hills and interesting terrain. Because of the narrow, windy, and steep nature of the trails, they are not well-suited for novice or low intermediate skiers. However, the flat sections of groomed terrain on the athletic fields behind the high school are perfect for beginners.

Directions: The recreational area can be accessed from Watertower Lane, with a parking lot next to the cell tower. To reach this lane, head east on Jewell Street, turn left onto Belleview Drive, follow it to the end and turn right onto Watertower Lane, which becomes a dirt access road.
