North Deering Park, Portland

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 24 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 0.9 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: pond, playing field, forest

The city acquired this 24-acre parcel in 2023, and has over the last year been improving its playing field (called Haverty Field on Google maps) and paths. When we visited in the spring of 2024, we found a pleasant 0.2-mile gravel path leading from the field to Washington Ave., as well as rougher trails through the woods. While these trails were not blazed, their edges were lined with fallen limbs so they were easy to follow. Occasionally, however, they would wander off into someone’s yard.

I am not sure if the city or Portland Trails or the city has plans to add more trails, I will check back. Meanwhile, a highlight is a small pond (Kiera Pond, I think) just below the playing fields to the north, with a marble bench dedicated to a small boy who liked to skate and catch frogs here.

Directions: There’s plenty of parking near the playing fields at the end of Ballpark Drive, off of Washington Ave. Once you pass the last house, you’ll follow a dirt road around a bend and up a small rise to the parking area.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
