Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, Cutts Island, Kittery

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: part of a 9,125-acre refuge
  • Trail Mileage: 1.8 miles
  • Pets: no
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: wetlands, Chauncey Creek, Brave Boat Harbor

This is a cool place to walk, along a narrow piece of forested land with views of wetlands on either side. When you reach the end of the point, you can look out over the vast expanse of land and wetlands protected in this national wildlife refuge. It looks like kayaking or canoeing could be pretty marvelous and quiet here, along Chauncey Creek and into Brave Boat Harbor.

Directions: From US Fish and Wildlife — Take I-95 to Exit 7 (York/Ogunquit) toward US-1. At the stop light, turn right onto US-1 south (0.3 miles). Turn left onto Route 1A/York Street (~1.5 miles). Turn right onto Route 103/Brave Boat Harbor Road/Lilac Lane (same road, three names). After 4.3 miles, turn left onto Cutts Island Road (~4.1 miles, if you pass the red school house on your left, you’ve gone too far). At the end of the road, turn left onto Seapoint Road. Parking is just over the Chauncey Creek Bridge on the left but is extremely limited.
