Timber Point, Biddeford

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 97 acres, 13-acre island
  • Trail Mileage: .8 miles one way
  • Pets: no
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: rocky oceanfront, sandy cove, old Ewing estate

A stunner! This is a wonderful trail (just under 0.8 miles one way) by a little beach and then along the Little River to the ocean’s edge where you have views of Goose Rocks Beach and the 13-acre Timber Island. You can cross the roughly 0.2-mile land bridge at low tide to reach the island. (Helpfully, there is a tide chart posted on the mainland point.) Once on the island, you can do a windblown 0.6-mile circumnavigation of its rocky shores.

The first half mile is along an old dirt road, suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. The final 0.2 miles is a grassy footpath, also fairly gentle. You can eschew the footpath and continue along  the road all the way to the old Ewing “summer cottage,” set in a dramatic seaside spot. (It has fourteen bedrooms). Walk around the beautiful house, designed by the architect Charles Ewing, and check out the remains of the estate’s peripheral buildings and amenities, like an overgrown pool and weedy tennis court. You can return to the footpath via a side path leaving from the west side of the mansion.

This is a Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge, so no dogs are allowed. The springtime birding is very good here.

Directions: There is limited parking. From Pool Street (Route 9), take Granite Point Road to the very end, about 1.5 miles. You’ll see a kiosk and room for about 10 cars.
