Bald Ledge, Porter

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: ~25 acres
  • Trail Mileage: .6 miles to summit
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Sights: Ironwood-Oak-Ash woodland, views from summit (1,200 ft.)

This is a great little walk, with views over Colcord and Bickford ponds. Francis Small Heritage Trust has created a nice trail from Danforth Lane, which is a dirt road off of Kennard Hill Road. (Since I visited, the land trust or town has created a parking area for 10-12 cars.) There are snowmobile paths crisscrossing the preserve, making for different access points, as you can see on my map. The walk to the summit from Danforth Lane is roughly .6 miles and fairly easy.

Check to see if the land trust is open; it can be closed in the winter.

Directions: From Kennard Hill Road, turn onto the dirt Danforth Lane. You’ll shortly see a rough old road, (Varney Road I think) heading gently up on your right. (My GPS didn’t put me on the Google map lane for some reason.) Park on the side of the lane and walk up this track. Look for little red markers with turtles on them. Just before you reach the field, the footpath turns right off the old road, leading you through a forest to the ledge. Or, you can park on Colcord Pond Road and walk the snowmobile paths to the top. I didn’t mark the snowmobile path all the way to the summit, but there is a clear track that parallels the footpath. The snowmobiles paths are not marked.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
