Baldwin Hill Conservation Cemetery

Fayette, Kennebec County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 90 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 0.6 miles in network
  • Pets: no
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: green cemetery, view

On this 90-acre property, the Kennebec Land Trust has devoted a few acres to a peaceful green cemetery nestled among towering white pines. You can walk up a gravel road for 0.3 miles to the top of the hill, where you can then walk a 0.25-mile packed-gravel path around the touching graves — all ecologically sound, for people who practiced all faiths — and check out a view.

Green burials use biodegradable caskets, shrouds, or urns for ashes instead of toxic or non-biodegradable materials like embalming fluids, concrete vaults, or caskets made of synthetic materials.

Directions: From Route 17 in Fayette, turn west onto Fayette Corner Road. Go one mile on Fayette Corner Road and the cemetery road will be on the right. Park at the gate marked by a KLT sign, but don’t block the road. There’s room for one, perhaps two, cars.
