Bluff Head, Sedgwick

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 58 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 1.2-mile walk
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: moderate
  • Sights: lovely view down the Bagaduce River

Like nearby Snow’s Cove Preserve, Bluff Head offers views of the Bagaduce River, but this time from up high, on Bluff Head. The rocky outcrop, accessible from the Overlook Trail, offers a great place to rest and check out the loveliness. The ascent to the view is slightly steep but very short. If you hike to the bluff in a clockwise direction, it’s more like a hop at the end to the view (a small switchback up the ledge), while you’re looking at a slightly longer approach coming the other way.

From the parking area, you’ll first walk through an airy oak forest. The distance to the view is about 0.6 miles (if you do the lollipop loop clockwise) and just a bit longer, ~0.7 miles or so, if you approach it counterclockwise. The total walk distance is about 1.2 miles, according to my GPS.

Directions: The trailhead is 0.2 miles down the Rope Ferry Road, on the right, in a lot big enough for several cars that is plowed in the winter. Turn onto Rope Ferry Road at the junction of Route 15 (Mines Road) and Route 176 (Southern Bay Road).
