Buck Hill Conservation Area, Veazie

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 64 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 2.1 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Sights: meadows, American Chestnuts

The town of Veazie protects and manages this 64-acre preserve, with help from volunteers. The access road through Greystone Trailer Park on Mutton Lane, when I visited in late 2023, was not in great shape — there were a lot of potholes, so take care if you have a low-clearance car.

Once you get to the preserve, you start your walk through a delightful meadow, on mown trails. You can walk the perimeter of the preserve through the woods, as well as take a few paths that cut through the middle to shorten your loop. It appears there are some well-used trails that head off the preserve, in the northwest corner, onto private property.

The blazes throughout the preserve were a bit faded when I visited, but there were laminated trail maps at every intersection and it was easy to stay oriented. Some of the trails can be very wet.

Directions: From Route 2, turn onto the Greystone Trailer Park road. Follow it through the mobile home park to Mutton Lane, which heads up hill and might have be in rough shape. It’ll make a sharp turn to the left and head up hill, and you’ll see the trailhead kiosk on your left.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
