Hunnewell Hill, Scarborough

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: Not sure
  • Trail Mileage: ~2.1 miles in trail network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: Nonesuch River

This is a great spot for a walk with one major drawback: it has no trailhead or parking. This is, of course, ideal for neighbors and others who live nearby, who clearly use this secreted-away trail system a lot. The protected land is a combination of preserve, easement with public access, and town land.

On foot, you can access the trails from a few places: Cumberland Way, Ridgeway Road, Woodspell Road, and Dylan Drive. The paths are easy to follow but inconsistently blazed. If you start at Cumberland Way and continue on the trail across Woodspell Road, you’ll start to see cute trail signs at intersections. Head over to the Nonesuch Trail and walk along the river to check out three nice spurs interspersed along the trail that bring you to the river bank. (You can see the short legs jutting out from the main trail on my map.)

In addition to the main trail network, there is a side trail marked for winter use only. It is very wet any other time of the year! I also saw a trail sign for Ale Trail, but we lost it after it jumped a stream.

Directions: The trail system edges Nonesuch River between Gorham Road (Route 114) and Route 701. There is no designated parking, unfortunately.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
