Hurricane Valley Farm

Falmouth, Cumberland County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: ~62 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 1.2 miles
  • Pets: no
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: fields

My map only shows one of the two loops at this working community farm, which got its name from a 1767 hurricane that leveled most of the trees in the area, opening it up for farmers. The first 0.8-mile loop makes a loop around some of the 62-acre farm’s fields. Because the mown trails here are grassy, I found them to be a bit tick-laden during my mid-August visit! So it’s possibly better to do in the winter as a short ski or snowshoe. The land trust has put up trail markers along the fence to mark the loop.

The Falmouth Land Trust bought this historic farm to protect it from being turned into a 17-home subdivision. It is partnering with the nonprofit Cultivating Community to provide affordable growing space, infrastructure, training, and support to over 50 immigrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking farmers here.

Directions: The address is 17 Schuster Rd. From Route 100, turn onto Schuster Road and turn right onto the gravel driveway. Ahead, you’ll see a trailhead kiosk in the middle of a grassy field and the trail markers heading off to the right toward the fields. The parking area is small, with two spaces, but you can also park along the gravel entrance road.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
