Kanokolus Bog

Unity, Waldo County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 189 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 1.6 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: raised bog, forested wetlands, woods, small field

The trails here are narrow, winding through a quiet woodland. If you visit in early June, the air might be perfumed with sweet Canada mayflower. The land is protected by Sebasticook Regional Land Trust.

In 0.3 miles from the trailhead, you’ll reach a short side footpath blazed yellow to the bog. The path connects to a snowmobile trail. Turn right and follow the track about 0.15 mile to the bog’s edge. You won’t be able to explore the bog except in wintertime; otherwise, it’s too wet. But the land trust says it’s a “high-quality example of a raised-level bog ecosystem.”

The main trail continues another 0.5 miles through the forest and a small meadow. It concludes with a 0.5-mile loop near Bacon Brook and the bog. It’s hard to see the bog through the trees unless you go off path.

Directions: The trailhead and small parking area is off Route 202, about 3.5 miles from downtown Unity on the left (east).
