I loved my ski through the rolling woods and fields of Nickerson Tree Farm! The 80 acres behind the Moosehead Lake area information center were conserved in 2018, and in the wintertime, you can ski along a single Classics track that winds through the property. The hilliest section is the area right around the information center, where the land drops down to the woods. Then the skiing becomes easier.
A few information panels along the trails offer facts about the are and the forest—a mix of spruce and fir mostly. The best mountain views are from the information center and the higher meadow trails close to it. If the center is open and you’re visiting the area, stop in and sign the visitor’s log. The staff know the trails well.
Another spot the map highlights is a perch overlooking Greenville Road. Here you’re meant to admire an unusual folded slate formation across the road. In the summer, visitors can walk the one open trail to this ledge overlook, about a half mile from the parking area.
Directions: Trails leave from the Moosehead Lake Region Visitors’ Center, 480 Moosehead Lake Road (US-6/US-15). You can park in the lot.
