Riverfront Woods Preserve

Yarmouth, Cumberland County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 50 acres
  • Trail Mileage: ~1.4 miles
  • Pets: no
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: ["Royal River, accessible trail"]

Owned and managed by the town of Yarmouth and protected by the Royal River Conservation Trust, this 50-acre preserve brings you to the edge of the always beautiful Royal River. The main trail, Kci-awtossis, is well made, mostly of wide, packed gravel with a few short boardwalks over wetter sections. It is designed to be universally accessible, and extends all the way to the river along the power line corridor. The out-and-back trail is a bit longer than a half mile, for a ~one-mile round trip. A bench has been set up at the river view. It’s really pleasant!

Two non-accessible loops branch off the main trail: Toqonastoq Eyihtit and Qapitiyik Wikultihtit, which mean “where the hemlocks are” and “where the beavers are,” respectively, in Ckuwaponahkiyik, a Wabanaki language. You can read more about the Native people of this area on several interesting informational panels placed along the trail.

Take note, you are not allowed to bring dogs to this preserve, which is tucked between neighborhoods.

Directions: The parking area is located at the end of Riverfront Drive, off of East Elm Street.
