This Downeast Salmon Federation preserve has 260 acres of land protecting 1.5 miles of river, as well as a small waterfall, a historic camp, and an old homestead. It is set with a broader region of river land conserved by the Dederation, whose mission is to conserve and restore wild sea-run fish and their habitats in Downeast Maine.
The organization’s goals are wildlife and ecosystem restoration rather than outdoor recreation, so during my visit, I found the trail system a bit hard to navigate and somewhat overgrown. But I think protecting habitat is more important than ensuring someone has a good walk! And I’ll return one day to try again!
Directions: Approximately 3 miles from Blacks Woods Road is a marked parking area where there are 2 trail heads to access the preserve on other side of the road.
