Tatnic Woods Preserve

Wells, York County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 26 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 1 mile
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: vernal pools

The one-mile trail through this Great Works Regional Land Trust preserve brings you through old oaks and mature forest dotted with boulders spat out by a glacier eons ago. You’ll also pass several dark vernal pools. The Tatnic region has the highest density of vernal pools in New England. Also, geologists have identified this area as the one-time caldera of an ancient, huge volcano!

The land trust explains that the Wabanaki word tatnic might mean “the quaking place” and if so, likely refers to the region’s quaking bogs. Quaking bogs, which I believe are named for their shakiness when walked on, are also known as swingmoors. 🙂

The walking here is mostly easy, with some gently rolling terrain.

Directions: The trailhead is on Tatnic Road, next door to 2462 Tatnic Road, about 1,200 feet from the intersection with Cheney Woods Road.
