The destination is the point of this short walk! A quarter-mile trail through a mossy forest brings you to a bright sandy beach on clear Wabassus Lake. Note that as you get close to the beach on the trail, the path takes a hard right, bringing you to a picnic table and an opening to the beach.
While the trail is short and easy, it slopes slightly down over uneven terrain, with roots and rocks.
The trail is part of the fabulous 57,703-acre Downeast Lakes Community Forest, land that is protected and cared for by the Downeast Lakes Land Trust.
The name of this beach may come from a poem written in 1963 by Guy Franklin MacArthur, about a baby and her first visit to the beach. Downeast Lakes Land Trust writes “the poem was written long before concerns about development pressures and the potential loss of public access led to the land trust’s founding in 2001.”
Directions: (From the land trust) Take the Fourth Lake Road (also known as Wabassus Road) west from Grand Lake Stream for 3.6 miles. Turn left onto Wabassus Mountain Road. Pass a side road on your right, and look for the trailhead sign on your right. There is parking for six or so vehicles.
