Kelley Farm, Mount Desert Island (Bernard)

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 10 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 0.6 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: Cousins Creek, old farm fields

This former saltwater farm (there’s still a large garden on site for families and food banks) is another place to visit to get away from the crowds of the national park. It’s small — 10 acres — but you can walk along mown paths (be careful of ticks!) to the top of a knoll for a mountain view. You can also visit “Secret Island,” a small piece of land connected to the farm that feels surprisingly secluded. The land is protected by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust.

Directions: (From MCHT) From the junction of Routes 102 and 102A in Tremont, drive 1 mile west on Route 102. The preserve is on the left, beyond the Tremont Consolidated School and immediately after crossing the bridge over Cousins Creek. The parking lot is quite large.
