Both a fabulous (and delicious!) destination and a short walk, Milbridge Commons has a 0.2-mile, wheelchair-accessible trail that circles a huge “nibble garden” and pollinator garden. The public is welcome to gather produce, for free, from the rows and spirals that the masterful gardeners created. (In aerial photos of the garden, it looks like the garden spells out a secret poem for extraterrestrials!). Signs indicate what vegetables are ready and how much you are allowed to take. The views of the river are beautiful, the benches are artful.
The garden at Milbridge Commons is run by Women for Healthy Rural Living to “provide an equitable and accessible path to health and wellness.” It is a paragon of community generosity and communality.
The nearby 0.1-mile paved Sudsbury trail follows the wide Narragaugus River and is dotted with a few benches and a gazebo. (The two trails don’t connect, but both are downtown.)
Directions: To reach the Commons and its garden, turn onto a short drive that’s across the street from Milbridge Historical Society. There’s plenty of parking here. To walk the Sudsbury Trail, there is parking on the side of the road for two or so cars off of Route 1A.
