Muddy River Forest

Naples, Cumberland County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 26 acres
  • Trail Mileage: ~0.5 miles
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: Muddy River, Sebago Cove

The water in Muddy River was clear and dark when we checked out its moss-covered stones, small cascades and ribbony path toward Sebago Lake. It’s a beautiful little river, good habitat for brook trout.

On our visit to this 26-acre parcel donated by Robert Hennick and his family to Land Echo Land Trust in 2025, we followed a flat, wide track for 0.25 miles to the property’s northern border. We saw no obvious footpaths to the river, so found a couple of places where it was relatively easy to make our way through the woods to reach its banks. Then we commenced to take many photos!

On the other side of the road from the land trust property is a small town park with a marked nature trail that makes a tiny lollipop loop. It takes just five or so minutes to walk. The park includes stone steps to the water’s edge, a fishing/observational dock, two benches and a picnic table.

Directions: You can park at the little town park called Muddy River Bog Preserve, on Lake House Road, at the northern tip of Sebago Cove. There’s a small U at the boat launch with room for four or so cars. Cross the street to explore Loon Echo Land Trust’s land.
