QUICK TRAIL FACTS
- Preserve Size: 78 acres
- Trail Mileage: 1.3 miles in network
- Pets: yes
- Difficulty: easy
- Sights: Salmon Falls River, swamp white oak
The 78 acres of forested habitat here includes 1,680 forested feet along the Salmon Falls River, and two places along the trail with great views across the wide river. Looks like you might be able to swim? There’s a big rock on the other side of the river, in New Hampshire, where I’ve seen people jump in.
The loop from the parking area to the river and back is roughly 1.0 mile. Overall, the trails are flat, wide, and easy — remarkably smooth for forest paths. There is just a bit of a hill down to the riverside.
You can watch a little video about the Great Works Regional Land Trust’s vision for the parcel on YouTube (and check out the nice drone footage!). The trust is trying to nurse the plot into a healthy old-growth forest, to provide habitat for wildlife. Plus, large older trees suck in lots of carbon dioxide.
Directions: There is a decently sized parking area off Route 236, close to the intersection with Berwick Road, and 0.26 miles from Power House Road (where there is a trail head but no parking).
