This small 317-foot hill (elevation gain, 265 ft.) offers a fairly moderate hike and astonishing views from an open summit. I think the view is especially lovely when you can watch fog rolling over the bay and islands.
The Downeast Coastal Conservancy recommends you make a loop by hiking up Historic Trail to the Summit Loop Trail and descending via Silver Mine Trail. Additional trails can lengthen your hike if you’re enjoying the scenery (and the birding!), including a 0.5-mile loop that brings you to the shore.
So, if you’re not feeling up to hiking the hill, or you feel like diving into the ocean after a sweaty hike, check out the short and easy shore trail. It’s about 0.25 miles if you go directly to a quiet beach of stones and sand. You’ll see the shore trail across the street from the parking area. It passes to the side of the cemetery.
Directions: From Route 1, turn left onto Pigeon Hill Road for 4.5 miles. The parking area is across from an old cemetery.
I had a minor mishap with my camera so only have a couple of photos of the summit view to share.
