Prentiss Woods

Bangor, Penobscot County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 25.5 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 1.4 miles
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: old-growth forest

These city woods contain some beautiful white pines that soar high above the trails. Hopefully they can survive the rigors of coming storms. In addition, there are mature red cedars and stands of beech, hemlock and balsam firs.

The trails are wide, flat, and even for the most part, and link up to Bangor Hill School. The 25.5-acre preserve offers a shady, peaceful place to walk.

The land was gifted to city of Bangor in 1923 by the heirs of Samuel Prentiss, with the intention of preserving the land and its grove of old-growth white pines. Unfortunately, a city forester in the 1960s logged 21 of the 26 acres, and did it again in 2000. But some visitors to the preserve have found trees that survived the cuts that are between 150 and 200 years old.

Directions: The main parking area is off Grandview Avenue, about 500 feet on the left after Hobart Street, which is the high school entrance road. If you’re coming the other direction, the parking area is about 930 feet after the intersection of Grandview Ave. and Whisper Drive.
