The trails at Sebasticook Land Trust’s Richardson Memorial Preserve begin on mown paths through large, open fields before heading into the mixed woods, including a dense stand of balsam fir. Eventually, the trails emerge alongside the shallow, sparkling waters of Sandy Stream. On my map, you can see all the times I left the path to try to take pictures of the stream since it was so beautiful. It didn’t appear too many people use the trails, and there were some grassy, brushy sections, so be sure to protect yourself against ticks.
If you like poetry, you’ll appreciate the poems that have been added to the trail!
The beauty of the spot belies the environmental tragedy behind it. The fields were used by farmers up to 2022, until PFAS contamination was detected in the soil. The fields are currently managed for grassland bird habitat. (I didn’t notice any signs about dogs, but to protect birds, it’s good practice to leash them up when walking through grassy meadows during the nesting season.)
Directions (From the land trust): From Unity, turn onto Depot Street (Route 139) at the Dunkin’ Donuts and proceed by the church. At the stop sign, turn right onto Route 139/Route 220 and drive for four miles. After Thorndike village as you climb the rise turn soft right onto Bailey Road. After the stop sign continue straight on the gravel road for a half mile to the end and then turn left onto Stevens Road. The kiosk for the preserve is on the right, nearly immediately.
