Sanders Hill

Rome, Kennebec County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 6,800 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 2.9-mile loop
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: moderate
  • Sights: brook, wooded 854-ft. summit area with views through trees

The Sanders Hill trail offers a relatively easy, gradual climb, and a satisfying 3-mile loop, but the views aren’t as nice as they are elsewhere in the 6,800-acre Kennebec Highlands.

But Beaver Brook, which you follow for some of the time, is quite pretty. In addition to a well-blazed, well-maintained hiking trail, there are unimproved trails winding through this area and the rest of the Highlands that look, while a bit rough, like they could be fun to explore (and bike). Some people follow them from here to Vienna Mountain, which is beautiful.

The trail bypasses the 853-foot summit. At the high point, the elevation gained from the trailhead is about 390 feet.

Directions: 1.3 miles south of Watson Pond Road’s junction with Route 27, there is a small parking area on the right.
