Mount Phillip offers a relatively easy hike to a nice view of Great Pond from its 755-foot summit, where there is a a comfortable place to take it all in from a beautifully carved stone seat for one! Others can sit on the ledge.
The 1.6-mile loop includes a short, pleasant ridge walk at the summit, with scraggly oaks growing along the ledge. The best view is from the easternmost end, where the little seat is located.
From the upper parking lot, the loop begins at about 0.1 miles, where it crosses a small boulder field. Then it offers a mostly easy forested hike along a long ridge, in either direction. When you get close to the summit, both trails get a bit steeper as you approach and climb the ledge.
The trail has two parking lots, which is helpful since this is a popular destination on a nice day. From the lower lot, you’ll tag on an extra 0.3 miles.
Directions: If you’re coming from Route, 27, turn onto Route 225 go 1.3 miles. The first of two trailheads and parking lots will be on your left. Continue another 0.2 miles for the upper parking lot, also on the left, directly across from Starbird Lane. If you park at the lower parking lot, you’ll add a spur (0.3 miles) to your hike. Both lots have room for 5 to 6 cars
