The nonprofit Skyline Farm has a cavernous carriage museum with an incredible antique carriage and sleigh collection, and an easy, pleasant trail system that follows old bridle paths and meanders through hayfields and woods.

According to its website, the farm provides educational and recreational programs based on the role of horse-drawn transportation in New England. For special events, it offers the public carriage and sleigh rides! Try to plan your visit for when the museum is open to see the different types of transportation used in Maine in different seasons and for many different purposes—watering down dusty roads, bringing children to school, delivering mail, peddling wares to people in the country, and transporting tourists, or pianos!

Olympic Nordic skier John Morton designed the lovely, easy system of trails. There’s about 2.5 miles around the farmland. They start at the large parking lot next to the museum, heading out across the meadows, and are neatly mowed in the spring and summer. One winding forest loop (marked with a wheelchair on the map) is made of packed dirt, so could be accessible for some wheelchairs. For those who want to access this loop directly, you can park at the smaller lot off Sweetser Road. The rest of the trails are mostly easy, save for one steepish hill down to a pretty stream.

Water District Public Water Land: Additionally, for those who want to extend their walk, you can cross Sweetser Road and explore the ~1-mile loop trail through the Yarmouth Water District. I’ve marked this in orange. No motor vehicles or target practice are allowed here, but walkers, horses, and dogs are okay. The flat, easy loop circles a low, sandy depression, and at points, you can perch at the edge for views over the forest canopy.

Directions: The physical address of Skyline Farm is Skyline Farm, 95 The Lane, North Yarmouth. Once you turn onto The Lane go about a mile to the large parking lot of the right, right before you hit Sweetser Road. Additionally, those who wish to use the accessible trails may park at the smaller lot off Sweetser Road, which the farm reserves for those with mobility issues.
