Smithfield Plantation

Litchfield, Kennebec County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 103 acres
  • Trail Mileage: ~1.7 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: wetland, woods, "natural amphitheater"

The main loop here is roughly 1.3 miles, with a small spur trail to a pretty marsh. The forest is dotted with dark vernal pools and lined with mossy stone walls. The 100-acre preserve also includes an outdoor amphitheater, about a half-mile or so walk from the large parking lot. Other amenities include a covered picnic table, nature signs (including tree identifiers), and several benches along the pleasant trail.

The map at the trailhead includes a “summit” elevation of 432 feet, meaning the elevation gained from the parking area is 56 feet! So it’s very reasonable.

The town, with help from volunteers, protects and maintains this preserve.
