Ted Wells Memorial Trail in blue; Manor Street trails in red.

The Ted Wells portion of this trail system is closed! And access to the rest of the trail system is limited.

In the old days, the Ted Wells Memorial trail brought along a short trail to a boardwalk, beautiful deck and overlook of the protected salt marsh. But this infrastructure was dismantled after deteriorating, and nowadays you can follow a forested one-way trail to a view on the marsh and its graceful river.

The trail begins at Oceanwood camp, which has a lot at the front of the building for parking. You can continue down the camp drive, which curves around the main building, to reach the trailhead and kiosk next to the swimming pool.

Once on the path, you’ll pass through a couple of nets for disc golf course before entering the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge. The route is marked with “trail” signs and a few white painted arrows.

If you’re looking for a longer walker, you can carry on along unmarked but easy-to-follow trails around the wastewater facility. There are a couple of nice viewpoints along Goosefare Brook. Parking is possible along the wide shoulder at the end of Manor Street.

In the slideshow below, I’m including a map from Saco Bay Trails that shows area trails, including the Ted Wells trail (in purple).

Directions: (From the land trust) From downtown Saco, go north on US-1 and then right onto ME-5 (Ocean Park Road). Pass through the “Halfway Intersection” in Old Orchard Beach and continue on Temple Avenue toward Ocean Park. Cross the railroad tracks and turn right on Royal Street. Drive to the end where you will find parking on the left in front of the Oceanwood Camp office. Walk to the right of the camps main building and look for the trailhead kiosk that is to the left of the pool at the edge of the woods.

  1. Access to this trail was limited by Oceanwood recently, it may be inaccessible. Supposedly access can be granted by contacting Oceanwood at 207-934-9655. As of 2026, Saco Bay Trails website show it as closed due to loss of access through private land.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
