York Hill Farm

New Sharon, Franklin County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: ~6,800 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 12.3 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy to challenging
  • Sights: groomed bike trails, bogs

Every winter this area becomes a mecca for fat bikers. Less elaborately twisty than many other mountain bike paths, this extensive network — all groomed by a dedicated volunteer — lets you build up real speed as it brings you through an expanse of protected land, the Kennebec Highlands. (Some of the trails do pass through private land whose owners grant permission for trails, so be mindful of posted signs.) Snowshoers and skiers are also welcome.

You’ll wind around and over small forested hills and wetlands. Once you get out there, it’s easy to do a 9- or 14-mile bike ride.

The trail system is not as appealing the rest of the year, as the trails cross bogs and other terrain that is only passable when frozen and covered with snowpack.

Directions: Turn onto York Hill Road from Route 27, staying left at the bend and passing 5 Corners Road on your right. The very large parking lot will be on the right in about 1.2 miles from the intersection with Route 27. Continue on foot or bike approximately 0.25 miles up the road and you’ll see the trail entrance on the left.
